Hello friends,
Welcome back to Speaking in Tongues, a monthly newsletter / interview series from Black Eyes that extends the thread we started with our zine of the same name. If you haven’t checked it out, you can find it here.
In this edition, we turn the page and, for our paid subscribers, resurface a Punk Planet interview from 20 years ago…
Thank You, Everyone
Our year of reunion activities came to an end in Chicago earlier this month. Many many thanks to the incredible Lifeguard for spending the whole weekend with us. Thanks also to TALSounds for joining us for two nights at the Empty Bottle, and to Daddy’s Boy for playing with us at the Attic.
Here’s what it looked like, courtesy of our exceptional sound engineer Katie Lau:
Like we said in a IG post right after the weekend: We played 12 shows in 12 months across six cities with 16 exceptional groups. The first shows were exactly 20 years after our S/T came out, and the last exactly 20 years after we broke up. This is not the end - further transmissions coming in 2025.
Thanks to everyone who played with us, worked with us, helped to make it happen, and of course to everyone who came to the shows. Special thanks to our exceptional sound engineer Katie Lau, Forest Juziuk & Nevada Nieves on merch, Austin, L.A. and Chicago friends for their hospitality and shared equipment and Chris Richards for all the energy and support. Special thanks to Kevin for the practices.
Much love and gratitude; we can’t wait to get back out there.
2025
While we dive into writing for the next nine months, we’re also starting to think about what we’ll do and where we’ll be in 2025. If you’re interested in having us play in your town, get in touch via blackeyesdischord@gmail.com and we’ll see if there’s a way to make it happen.
Keep in mind that it takes a bit of work to make one of these performances happen. Large urban areas work best. That said: If we can make it work, we will be there.
Here are some ideas. Let us know.
With love,
Dan, Daniel, Hugh, Jacob, Mike
An Interview with Black Eyes from 2003
In June of 2003, we spoke with Punk Planet’s Julianne Shepherd in Portland, OR on the sidewalk outside the Red and Black Cafe. The conversation happened on our first full US tour, and came out in Punk Planet issue 57. It’s a great window into what we were then, and, in many ways, what we still are.
