Hello friends,
Welcome back to Speaking in Tongues, a monthly newsletter / interview series from Black Eyes that extends the thread we started with our zine of the same name. If you haven’t checked it out, you can find it here.
In this edition, we remind you about shows in Austin, Los Angeles, and Chicago, share a bit about our immediate future, and, for our paid subscribers, offer an interview with Ryan from Algiers.
Austin! Los Angeles! Next Week!
We’re very excited for the last of our winter ‘23/’24 shows next week. As of this writing, there are still tickets available for Austin, where we will be joined on Friday, January 26, by Water Damage and Wet Dip. Here’s a button for you:
Meantime, our Saturday, January 27, performance with No Age and Maral is now sold out (amazing; thank y’all!). There are, however, still tickets for the Sunday performance, when we’ll be joined by Puli. You can get those using this button:
Chicago! March 8 & 9!
We’re also extremely stoked for our two Chicago performances. These will be on March 8 and 9, and, as we reported last time, we’ll be joined by the amazing Lifeguard. This week, we were pleased to announce that TALSounds will be opening both of those shows. Tickets can be found below:
What’s next though?
In three words: More new tunes.
We’d entertained the idea of travelling to Europe this spring or summer. And, when scheduling conflicts prevented us from doing that, we kicked around the notion of playing a weekend’s worth of shows in Eastern Canada or the Pacific Northwest of the United States.
Ultimately, though, we decided that we’d very much like to spend the relatively limited amount of time we have to play this summer and fall meeting up to write more new songs. Those of you who’ve seen us in D.C. and New York, and those who will see us in Austin and L.A. will (have) hear/d our two latest, the first new music we’ve written collectively in 20 years. Each of these tracks was written initally via shared recording and then shaped and polished over a weekend this past August. We’re hoping for a bit more of that this summer.
We’ll keep you posted — both about new work and, hopefully, more live performances (in 2025).
With love,
Dan, Daniel, Hugh, Jacob, Mike
An Interview with Ryan Algiers
Back in December, Black Eyes had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Algiers. And though the description certainly fits, powerful doesn’t quite do the experience justice.
Ryan Algiers answered a few questions posed by Black Eyes’ Mike via email. The transcript of this conversation is shared below for our paid subscribers.
