Hello friends,
Welcome back to Speaking in Tongues, a monthly newsletter / interview series from Black Eyes that extends the thread we started with our zine of the same name. If you haven’t checked it out, you can find it here.
In this edition, we thank you for hanging with us in Austin and L.A., remind you about our upcoming Chicago performances (in two weeks!), and, for our paid subscribers, offer an interview with composer Pent.
Thank You, Austin and L.A.
Seriously — our time in Austin and L.A. was amazing. Many thanks to everyone who came out, to No Age for two nights of great playing, Water Damage for the incredible set (and lending us gear + putting many of us up), to Wet Dip, Maral and Puli for opening up. Also big up to Resound in Austin and to the Lodge Room in L.A.
For those who missed it on our Insta (or live and in person) here’s a slice of the Saturday L.A. performance:
Chicago, 3/8 and 3/9
Our next performances are in Chicago in just about two weeks. We’ll be at the Empty Bottle with our friends Lifeguard and TALSounds. As of this writing, tickets are still available. Click the buttons below to grab some.
Summer 2024
As we noted in our last dispatch, these Chicago shows will be our last performances of 2024. Beginning this May, we’ll decamp back to Hugh’s basement in Silver Spring to continue work on new songs. Those of you who’ve seen us this winter have seen the first of these. We’re eager to get cracking on some more.
With love,
Dan, Daniel, Hugh, Jacob, Mike
An Interview with Pent
We were first introduced to Pent’s music in the spring of 2021, after a handful of elliptical Bandcamp releases began to make their way across our desks via word of mouth. Info was, and remains scarce for the general public, but Daniel soon ran into her in the N.Y. electronic music community. Pent’s work bridges techno, 20th century composition, sound art and IDM’s most austere, sculptural iterations. Daniel took a chance to sit down and speak with her about her process, writing chamber music in high school, death metal, ambient music, the politics of Stockhausen and much more in what turned out to be her first interview.
